Momentum are a local children’s charity providing invaluable support to children and their families suffering from cancer and other life-limiting conditions. We’re delighted to have awarded over £40,000 to Momentum across a number of grants.
The charity strives to ease suffering of affected children and their families, by offering practical and emotional support with their family support programme. They believe no family with a seriously-ill child should have to cope alone, and explain just how they are working to tackle this ever-growing need for support. We caught up with them to find out how our recent grants are benefiting local people.
Family Support Workers offer tailored practical and emotional help to the entire family, through our unique support programme at home and in hospital, which includes therapy services, counselling, holidays and experiences. We also improve the environment for children treated in local hospitals, with our children’s ward refurbishments. At any one time we support around 150 families whose children are in treatment and a further 100 bereaved families, across South West London, Surrey and West Sussex.
Being told your child has cancer or a life-challenging condition is devastating. Day-to-day life is turned upside down. We help the entire family during these times of unimaginable strain. Our team consists of Family Support Workers who directly assist families with regular visits and phone calls and assessments, and the Family Support Coordinators who arrange all the vital services, on recommendation from the Family Support Workers, for every child, sibling and parent that we help. Our aim is to be that vital support to as many families as we can.
The recent generous grant from the Community Foundation for Surrey will go towards our Family Support Coordinators, who play a vital part in the Support Team. They ensure that the Family Support Workers have time to spend providing the practical and emotional support with the families and taking on the often time-consuming job of setting up relevant services, such as music therapy courses, counselling and booking respite holidays, for families most in need.
Rebecca, mother to 7-year-old Harry, shares below how we helped her and her family. Harry was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 3 years old.
“The biggest thing for me, was having someone there who understood. I knew I could talk everything through with Bianca, our Family Support Worker. I didn’t have to explain myself and she really helped normalise my situation.
They are just there for you. The support they offer doesn’t come and go. It’s unconditional and is never withdrawn. It’s bespoke to you and your family. I often think of the journey we have been on and all Momentum Children’s Charity has done for us.”
We are incredibly lucky to receive a huge amount of support from individuals within the community, as well as local schools and local companies. We might be a small charity, but we have big ambitions. Almost 4,000 children and young people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer every year, that’s 10 families every single day. We want to extend our existing services to reach more families and expand our support team to meet increasing demand for family care. We’d like to develop new services to further improve experiences for children with cancer and life-challenging conditions.
The Community Foundation for Surrey is a philanthropic charity inspiring local giving for local need. The grants we make to groups in Surrey such as Momentums Children’s Charity are made entirely possible by the giving of individuals, businesses and trusts whom we work closely with to help direct their giving to causes they are passionate about.
