The Power of Philanthropy

12th June 2018

This week we ask our Chairman, David Frank, about his involvement as a Trustee over the past nine years…

Since joining the Foundation in 2009, after a long career in Law, I have come to appreciate the hidden and very real need evident in Surrey.

Perceived as an affluent area, this need is often overlooked, but it is something that I, together with fellow Trustees, Ambassadors and Foundation staff, are striving to tackle.

I am very pleased to have played a part in the £22million we have generated across Surrey since the Foundation’s inception, and I am confident that, with more philanthropic individuals and the Foundation’s continued expertise and knowledge, it will not be long before we generate even more.

Fortunately, my time as a Trustee has allowed me to see the many passionate and charitable people that surround us, and the positive impact their money has had locally. In working with other like-minded people, a philanthropic community has grown and, with that, so has a more generous and self-aware Surrey.

Part of my role here is to sit on the Grants Policy Group. This group assesses the many grant applications we receive on a quarterly basis. I immensely enjoy this involvement in deciding which applications are in the best position to make a difference in Surrey, and therefore which ones can be sent to our donor funds for their consideration.

It is our local knowledge that helps our supporters to connect to projects which are often operating below the radar, where sometimes even a small amount of money can make a difference to the project’s success or failure.

Our Trustees bring a variety of skills to the Foundation, sitting on a number of our Boards sub-committees such as our Development & Marketing, Personnel, and Finance & Investment Groups. Trustees are also involved with Foundation events, AGMs and work closely with our Ambassadors. It is their wealth of knowledge and connections that allow us to continue to grow as an organisation and achieve the greatest impact within the community.

Being a Trustee of the Community Foundation has given me the opportunity to make a real difference, and we are always looking for dedicated and charitable individuals to join our growing Board. In joining with us, our efforts will continue to highlight and help overcome this hidden deprivation and make a real and lasting difference across local communities.

If you have been inspired, please do contact us to discuss how you could be part of the solution.
