Case Study: Sally’s Story – Finding Strength and Respite Through the Carers Support (Guildford) Fund
At the Community Foundation, we are proud to manage the Carers Support (Guildford) Fund - an initiative designed to provide vital respite and wellbeing opportunities for unpaid carers across Guildford. One of the most touching stories we’ve encountered through this fund is that of Sally, whose journey captures the very essence of why this support is so important.
Sally spent many years working in a school before her life took an unexpected turn. She became a full-time carer for her husband, and anther family member. She often remarks—half-jokingly, half-wistfully—that “patience and caring were never my natural strengths, so God must have a sense of humour.” But what Sally may lack in self-professed patience, she more than makes up for in compassion and perseverance.
Over the past four years, Sally has received five grants from the Carers Support (Guildford) Fund. Each grant has been thoughtfully used to provide moments of relief, reflection, and joy - essentials often missing in the demanding world of unpaid care.
One of the grants enabled Sally to visit RHS Wisley Gardens, where she could reconnect with nature and take time to breathe. Regular visits have become a cherished outlet for her wellbeing—an opportunity to recharge both physically and emotionally. Another grant allowed her to travel to the north of England to visit family and a close friend, giving her both a change of scenery and a comforting sense of connection.

Sally shared, “I can hardly put into words the difference this has made. It has been a godsend.” She described how rare it is for her to focus on herself amidst the responsibilities of caring, and how “it is so helpful to know the Fund is there to help—it helps me carry on in the dark days. It keeps me going.”
Sally’s story is one of quiet resilience and unwavering dedication. It reminds us that carers too need care, and that small acts of support can have a profound impact. Her journey is a powerful testament to the value of the Carers Support (Guildford) Fund - and to the strength and humanity of the carers it supports.
