CFSurrey Launches New Surrey Neighbourhood Needs Map to Guide Grant Funding

The Community Foundation for Surrey (CFSurrey) is proud to launch the Neighbourhood Needs Map – a free, interactive resource designed to highlight areas of need across the county and ensure that grant funding makes the greatest possible impact.

One of our key values is ‘We value expertise and continuously build our understanding of local needs through curiosity and research’. To support this, we have worked with the lovely team at Lincolnshire Community Foundation to develop this new tool which we hope will be useful to anyone wishing to address the needs of our communities in Surrey.

The map draws on more than 1,000 trusted datasets from sources including the Office for National Statistics, Public Health England, and the UK Government. This data has been carefully reviewed, collated, and visualised to provide a clear picture of deprivation and inequality at a highly local level.

With the Neighbourhood Needs Map, users can explore themes such as health, housing, education, and community wellbeing. The visualisations go right down to Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level, allowing pockets of deprivation to be identified at a street-by-street scale. The data can also be searched and compared by Local Authority District or Ward, making it simple to see how different communities are affected.

By assigning each area a total score across themes, the tool provides a unique way to understand need across Surrey. For CFSurrey, it will be a vital aid to our work in ensuring that grants are targeted effectively and reach the people and places that need them most. This tool doesn’t replace listening to our communities of course – another of our values is ‘We care deeply about our communities and donors, ensuring they are represented and included in all aspects of our operations’. But hopefully this tool will help us to have many more useful collaborative conversations.

We are delighted to share this new tool with our partners and the wider community. By making the data open and accessible, we can work together to direct funding where it will make the greatest difference,
— Dr Rebecca Bowden CEO, Community Foundation for Surrey

Trial Period and Feedback

The Neighbourhood Needs Map will be hosted on the CFSurrey website for a trial period of three months, ending in December 2025. We would greatly value your feedback on how the tool works, how easy the data is to understand, and any suggestions for improvement. This feedback will help us revisit the tool and enhance its functionality once the trial period has concluded.

The Neighbourhood Needs Map is free to use and available to everyone. Whether you are a funder, local authority, charity, or community organisation, the tool provides the insight needed to support Surrey’s most vulnerable communities.
