CFSurrey Funding Expands SMEF Mental Health Support for New Mothers Across Surrey

CFSurrey is delighted to share that Round 6 of the Mental Health Scale-Up Fund will support Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum (SMEF) to grow its inspiring “Baby Steps” project over the next five years. This grant also marks a special milestone for us, taking our total funding distributed to over £30 million since we began.

Baby Steps offers a safe, welcoming space for mothers experiencing mental health challenges, particularly those from minority ethnic communities who may face additional barriers such as stigma, isolation, and a lack of culturally appropriate support.

For many women, the project is life-changing. E, a 42-year-old mother, described her first session by saying: “I think I have found my people today.” After living with depression for over 15 years, she had often felt isolated and judged. At Baby Steps, she found a supportive, non-judgemental environment where women can speak openly and feel understood.

Through shared conversations, participants explore simple and practical ways to support their wellbeing, from accessing professional help to building routines, getting outdoors, and connecting with others.

Most importantly, Baby Steps helps women feel less alone. E is now a regular attendee, building confidence, forming friendships, and taking positive steps forward.

This funding will enable SMEF to reach more mothers across Surrey and provide consistent, long-term support where it is needed most.

The Mental Health Scale-Up Fund is made possible thanks to the generosity of four private foundations, Surrey County Council, and Surrey Heartlands Health and Care Partnership, now part of NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board.
